Track revenue from X, Reddit and Product Hunt launches

A practical guide by the AnalyticFast Team. Examples are illustrative; this article reports no original research or customer performance results.

A busy launch day can produce screenshots of visitors without explaining which work brought customers. A small tagging plan and a verified checkout handoff make X, Reddit and Product Hunt activity easier to compare after the initial spike.

Use one campaign and distinct placements

The URLs below are examples for a fictional website and campaign. Replace the destination and labels with your real ones. The content value distinguishes placements; it is not a person identifier. The source values x, reddit and producthunt map to known sources in AnalyticFast.

Use a different label for a paid placement, email or follow-up message. Google’s campaign parameter guide explains the distinction between source, medium and campaign. Keep names stable in a shared link register, and never include email addresses, tokens or other personal data.

Test the links people actually click

Publish a test in an appropriate private or permitted surface when possible, follow the resulting link and inspect the final landing URL. Shorteners and redirects may alter context. A t.co referrer can identify X but cannot establish a particular post. An untagged Reddit referrer cannot identify a specific comment, and later brand search does not prove that Product Hunt caused the sale. Preserve the difference between observed context and a plausible explanation.

Join payments before comparing channels

Configure the payment provider webhook and forward optional visitor IDs in supported checkout metadata. A Buy click can help describe the funnel but does not confirm revenue. Run a sandbox visit-to-payment test for each link format and verify refund subtraction. Keep test payments on a separate analytics site.

Separate discovery from the last useful return

Someone may first find you on Product Hunt, return through an X post and buy after a direct visit. First touch can credit Product Hunt; the default last non-direct view can credit X. Use the same attribution definition across all comparisons. Do not add both allocations into a larger total or turn a source association into a causal claim.

Review cohorts after a consistent delay

Record visitors, new customers, net revenue, refunds and revenue per visitor for comparable windows. If buyers often return later, label the follow-up period and revisit the report. A launch-day payment may come from an earlier visitor; a launch-day visitor may buy next week. A calendar report is not automatically a cohort study.

Also record the effort: writing the post, responding to comments and any paid spend. A small community can produce fewer dollars at a higher visitor value, while a large launch can create more total revenue. Use the counts beside the rates and repeat a promising placement before generalizing.

Keep a lightweight launch log

For each placement, save the public post URL, campaign URL, time published, intended audience and the question tested. Use self-reported discovery answers as a separate qualitative signal. They can reveal word of mouth, but they should not silently replace the recorded source for a financial transaction.

Questions, answered.

Can an X referrer identify the exact post that generated a purchase?

No. A t.co or X referrer identifies a source, not necessarily a post. Use a placement-specific tagged URL when you control the link, and retain the uncertainty when tags are absent.

Should all three platforms use the same utm_source?

No. Use a distinct source per platform, a shared campaign for the initiative, and content labels for individual placements. Keep the naming convention consistent.
